1840 1863
The Campbell brothers begin development of a “corn drill” intended to facilitate corn planting. They work through many designs over the next 22 years.
1859: They are awarded a patent on the Campbell Corn Planter, but the machine still has operational shortcomings. Alexander’s discouragement with these problems leads to the sale of his interest in the business to James and William.
1863: James and William finally overcome the design problems and begin production of their first commercial corn drill.
